About Rehband As a Brand
Rehband is one of the most reputable names in the CrossFit circle when it comes to knee sleeves, and for good reason.
Rehband has hardcore fans among CrossFitters and is currently being endorsed by none other than Rich Fronning Jr, who is recognized multiple times as the Fittest on Earth in the past several years (2011-2015), and former Navy SEAL and CrossFit champion Josh Bridges.
If you check the feedback on Amazon or anywhere else that Rehband knee sleeves are being sold, you will find that the feedback is consistent.
Rehband’s knee sleeves are a little pricey but:
- they are extremely comfortable
- they are ergonomic or anatomically shaped
- they are better quality than most knee sleeves that they have tried in the past
- they last longer than your average knee sleeves
- they smell better after being soaked in sweat compared to many of the cheaper brands
- they are comparably better than their past pair (often cheaper or within the same price tier) of knee sleeves
- they offer great support to your knees
- the company gives great support replacing damaged or defective products
- the list goes on
This isn’t just the limited to Internet feedback.
Ask someone at your box who’s wearing Rehbands and you’re likely going to get similar feedback. And if that person happens to have tried on different brands of knee sleeves, you’re going to get more reasons why Rehbands are awesome.
While doing research for this post, I asked Amanda at my local CrossFit box who’s always rocking Rehband’s knee sleeves. She’s using Rehband’s 5mm (she owns multiple pairs) for CrossFit training and the Hatch Squat cycle and according to her:
She has worn different 5mm knee sleeves from different brands and hands down Rehband’s are the best because they are durable and thinner but has good support and doesn’t feel restricted because you can run in them. And they are so comfortable you don’t need to take them off when you are doing high rep, MetCon-type WODs.
About Rehband Knee Sleeves:
The Rehband knee sleeves, in general, gives the athlete warmth and support that helps prevent the risk of long-term knee injury and eases minor knee problems.
Rehband knee sleeves are made from Neoprene. You may also check out our guide on how to care for and wash neoprene.
It is also important to know that it’s a good idea to limit wearing neoprene to three to four hours at a time.
Rehband knee sleeves contain latex and rubber, in case you have any allergies. Rehband knee sleeves are sold in singles so remember to buy two when getting your pair online.
It is also important to remember that knee sleeves, no matter how awesome they are, will not protect you from injuries resulting from poor form. Always be mindful of your form, scale your movements to match your fitness level and work with a qualified coach on your heavy lifts.

That said you’re probably already excited about owning a pair of Rehband knee sleeves so you go to the website or Amazon or the local store and just noticed that there are several options.
The next question you’re trying to figure out is which pair do I buy first?
What We Cover in This Guide
We’re not going to go into too much detail about why Rehbands are one of the best pairs of knee sleeves you can own because you’re probably already reading this guide to find out which pair to buy among the many options you’re being presented with.
First, we are going to narrow down the options into three types of knee sleeves that Rehband offers by classifying them according to their thickness.
Then we are going to go into detail into what each knee sleeve thickness can do for you as well as its limitations.
Finally, we will give you our recommendations so you can be confident that you know all that you need to know when you make the purchase and just get your desired results in your workout.
Review of Sleeve Thickness
The thinner knee sleeves are intended to support you with recovery or prevent injuries for running or workouts with movements that involves a lot of reps.
The thicker knee sleeves are intended for heavy lifting because the additional support and helps you move the weight with more stability and the added bounce effect while wearing them contributes to the final two reps at the end of the set when you’re already close to your limit which according to legendary six time Mr. Olympia, Dorian Yates, is “where the magic happens.”
Rehband simplifies their knee sleeve options to the three levels of thickness being offered, the 3mm, the 5mm and the 7mm.
Each pair of knee sleeves has their intended purpose.
Let’s look at each one:
3mm Basic Support for General Every Day Training
The Rehband 3mm Knee Sleeves are great for everyday use on light workouts but not recommended for heavy lifting.
These pair of knee sleeves provide you with the following advantages:
- the maximum range of motion and does not restrict your movements.
- for athletes with motion heavy high intensity training regimens.
- aids in the recovery of existing injury or from the stress of the workouts.
- reduces pressure and swelling.
- keeps your knees warm on short and light workouts.
A pair of these knee sleeves are recommended for starters who engage in the following activities:
- Light stretching and body weight movements.
- Bootcamp or Metabolic Conditioning workouts that engage in high rep Air Squats, Wall Ball Shots, Thrusters, Kettlebell Movements and Box Jumps.
- Endurance sports like long distance running and training.
The 3mm sleeves are a good option if it’s hot outside and if you have both the 3mm and the 5mm the 3mm is cooler to wear. You can also consider the 3mm for activities that require you to be as light as possible.
It’s interesting to discover that many beginners have used this pair for additional support for their heavy lifts but only up to a certain weight then upgrade to the 5mm or 7mm’s.
Popular 3mm Variants
The most popular variants for the 3mm sleeves are the black and red RX (endorsed by Froning) and the basic blue 7953.
5mm All Around Support for High-Intensity Movements
The Rehband 5mm Knee Sleeves are the popular default knee sleeve option for CrossFitters because you can run in them and you can get support for heavy lifts.
These sleeves are intended for mixed activities with varied movements where both agility and support are required and sufficient for moderately heavy, high-intensity movements.
That said, this pair of knee sleeves can be used for most sports and almost anything you can throw at them.
The Rehband 5mm Knee Sleeves shine by providing heavy support to long distance runs, box jumps, burpees, air squats and most CrossFit movements including functional movements and weightlifting movements.
The 5mm sleeves help you lift heavy, as far as support goes, expect to reschedule your current one rep max and five rep max with more confidence and gradually exceed your current limits. If you are more attracted to the prospect of adding more weight to that barbell, you’ll benefit more from the 7mm knee sleeves offered by Rehband.
So if you’re doing constantly varied high-intensity functional movements along with some running and weightlifting but can only buy one pair, buy this 5mm pair first then upgrade to the 3mm if you’ll be doing more runs or the 7mm if you’re doing more lifts.
Popular 5mm Variants
The most popular variants of the 5mm Rehband knee sleeves are the black and red RX (endorsed by Froning) and the basic blue.
7mm Heavier Support to Add Kilos to Your Lifts
The Rehband 7mm is popular among weightlifters, powerlifters, strongmen and CrossFit athletes who focus on weight lifting because it gives the athlete powerful stabilisation and support while adding kilos to your lifts.
Every time you’re working to get past your heavy lift PR’s the 7mm can help you stay stable and focus on your effort.
The Rehband 7mm is noticeably thinner than other knee sleeve brands so you’ll notice that you get the support, bounce and warmth without it getting in the way.
If your fitness activity requires more heavy lifts and your focus is on gaining strength through a short workout that has you consistently challenging yourself to surpass the previous session’s maximum weight, then these are the pair for you.
If you’re a CrossFit athlete who focuses more on weight lifting this can be your primary pair of knee sleeves.
It’s also interesting that athletes who operate in cold environments prefer the 7mm because of the warmth it provides.
Popular 7mm Variations
Similar to the 5mms the most popular variants are the black and red RX (endorsed by Froning) and the basic blue.
There are two different approaches to selecting the perfect Rehband knee sleeves.
In the Rehband’s official guide, the 3mm is recommended for long endurance workouts and 7mm is for shorter heavier activities.
Froning recommends that you use 3mm for shorter lighter workouts and the 7mm for the longer heavier workouts.
We recommend that you base your buying decision on the type of training and activities that you engage in.
What if you could only buy one pair?
If you’re casually doing constantly varied, short high-intensity functional movements like CrossFit and don’t intend to specialise in MetCon’s or Lifts then the 5mm would be the best first pair to buy because it is well rounded. It can give you significant help with running and weightlifting but not to the extent that the 3mm or 7mm can. The Rehband 5mm’s are the perfect in between for most athlete’s needs.
If you intend to specialise more on endurance sports or engage in lighter and faster body weight boot camp type of movements or doing lots of reps then the Rehband 3mm knee sleeves will be a better option. If you’re a casual athlete the 3mm offers good enough support for most light workouts and sports.
If your focus is on weightlifting Rehbands 7mm knee sleeves will be the best pair to buy first. It can also help with many of the intense CrossFit movements.
If you consider yourself a well-rounded CrossFit athlete and you’re not sure with where to begin, start with the 5mm knee sleeves and buy another pair when/if you have decided to specialise.
If you specialise in a particular type of movement or training whether it’s light endurance go for the 3mm or heavy lifts go for the 7mm.
